I bought these for a chemistry lab. The long probes on these thermometers worked very well for measuring temperatures of fluids in deep containers. I am sure they would work perfectly in the kitchen as well. Temperatures are accurate and consistent. I bought 5 of these and they all read identically, which is pretty good, for something that is designed to just be a kitchen thermometer. They were reasonably priced too. I only had an issue with one of them - kept switching itself to Fahrenheit when student had set it to read in Celsius. Other than that, I am happy with this purchase.
I have always been a bit challenged cooking steaks and burgers on the grill. People have told me multiple "ways" of telling when a steak was "medium" and when to pull the burgers off. Still I ended up with underdone burgers and overcooked steaks. This takes the mystery out of it and my grilling skills are now complete.Using this the first time, I cooked pork steaks to perfection. The next time it told me I had left the burgers on too long drinking that "last" beer. LOL.I highly recommend this. I have bought another as a gift for a friend.
Nice, handy, thermometer, numbers are easy to see, C/F, easy to use.BUT it’s NOT INSTANT READ, no way!!!!!!I’ll stick it into a cooking steak or pork chop to check for doneness/temperature, and the stupid thermometer takes two minutes to give me a proper read. That’s just ridiculous, it’s a totally different piece of meat by then. The thermometer starts by showing some number, let’s say, 110 and goes up by a degree or sometimes 0.1 of a degree - and a minute or two later I get the read, let’s say 135.I mean, a thermometer is a handy tool if you want to cook your meat to your liked doneness, but come on, this thing is as far from instant read one as New York from the North Pole.
I’m very disappointed with this thermometer. I have had it 3 months and the display stopped working. I only ever used it to test water temperature. Now one half of the digits display so it is impossible to read. it worked great until this happened. Unfortunately, I am a 3 days out of the Amazon return window so I guess I won’t be able to tell if it was just a glitch in the one I had, or a poor product altogether.
I'm giving it 5 stars, but with a couple kind precautions for future buyers. It's really long! Nearly 9 inches total. So I have other "drawer thermometers", ones which are too big to carry in my pocket at work as a chef. I was looking for something smaller and more portable that would fit in my coat pocket. It was my fault that I did not read the specs more closely, or at all I guess, since it says "SUPER LONG PROBE".So.... My bad.It does just what it's supposed to do, though I would question the idea of using it in a fast paced, wet, hot, chaotic food service kitchen.Find something smaller, water resistant, and if you have old eyes you might want one that illuminates, but you won't find those things at this price.Hopefully you are informed by this.Everyone should have and use a thermometer.
