This item was not flat as described. It was curved and meant for a terrarium for your pet to be able to crawl through or used as a shelter or hideout. I needed it for my turtles pond so he could float while basking in the sun. To bad because the size was good.

I use these as basking spots for my two large red-eared slider turtles. They look nice in the mostly aquatic habitat, and the turtles can grip the bark well. I like using all natural material with my reptiles, but the unavoidable downside to that is that the bark pieces are of a different shape each time you buy one. I have purchased these from Amazon in medium, large and extra-large sizes and having gotten very different shapes, from very long and skinny to almost square. The pet supply stores don't stock the larger sizes, so it makes it hard to buy these for a certain spot or landscaping need. They seem a little overpriced, but the small sizes available in pet stores are as expensive as the Amazon counterparts.
Just received today. I am going to use it as a basking area in a pond I am building for my 3 small turtles - 2 southern painted and 1 Mississippi map. I am posting a picture so you can see how large it is. It is sitting on a Suncast storage seat, and it pretty much fills the seat. Right now I have it soaking in water to remove the tannins, and I rinsed it off to get the loose debris off. They should be able to climb up and get some sun, no problem. I believe you can join two together with marine silicone or even drilling holes at the edges and tether them together if you really need an enormous one.
I have a 180 gallon tank with three Red Ear Slider turtles that are about 5" long and one pound each. I recommend that you soak the cork in really hot water before using it or it will leach color into the water and you'll have tea colored water. I purchased the extra large flat so that it could accommodate more than one turtle. It worked pretty well for a while, but now it seems permanently water logged. The weight of a single turtle on the flat causes it to sink and the underside of the turtle is then under water. I'm going to see if I can find something more buoyant to attach to the underside to prevent the flat from sinking into the water. The turtles are supposed to have a basking area completely out of water. I like that this rides on top of the water as there is quite a bit of evaporation and I'm not so great at keeping the water level constant. I've searched for DIY turtle docks but have yet to find something appropriate.
I did read many reviews before I purchased this, so I knew that I may not get what I expected. My piece came in perfect condition and but not the size as stated in the description. That is the reason I am only giving this product 4 stars. My piece was about 14" long by 9" wide. While this is close to the description, it is not exact. The seller should consider revising the description to include an acceptable range to help potential buyers. I have attached some photos to help you get an idea of the size I received.
