Arnold Schwarzenegger is "The Running Man" in this scifi film classic from 1987-88. It's set in a dystopian future in which the United States has become a dictatorship run by a militarized political elite known as"The Cadre". One of the ways in which the Cadre maintains its power is by altering television film footage so that an incident's narrative fits the government's version of events. Schwarzenegger's character, for example, was a police captain falsely convicted of being "The Butcher of Bakersfield" when in fact he tried to prevent an armed police helicopter from firing into a crowd of protesters. After escaping from a federal prison, he is recaptured and forced to participate in the grisly but highly popular "Running Man" game show on TV, in which convicts can survive and get rich (in theory) IF they successfully complete a run through a ruined section of Los Angeles while being pursued by deadly and sadistic hunters who wear a variety of bizarre costumes. Richard Dawson portrays the evil and narcissistic game show host in this film. Maria Conchita Alonso becomes Arnold's ally after initially turning him in. Jesse Ventura plays acommentator for the show. Look for "The Solid Gold Dancers", a staple of 1980's television. Directed by Paul Michael Glaser.

Ranks in his top 5 I think

This is an essential Arnold (and Maria) movie. Richard Dawson also gives us a terrific alternate-universe version of himself. I (and I suspect others) like to view this movie and Total Recall back-to-back.You will likely have a pretty good idea of this movie's plot already, so aside from testing your memory on remembering the main satellite uplink's deactivation code, I'll add that this 4K version seems to make full-use of a 4K television's pixels. I don't have any older 1080i/1080p Blu-Ray version of this movie to compare, but I do still have my older DVD version to compare to, and there is no question of the higher quality video image. While my Sony UBP-X800 4K player provides excellent upscaling from DVD, playing this native 4K disc was noticeably better to my eyes, particularly in faster-moving action sequences such as when the rocket cart careens the 'contestants' down in to the 20 block game zone.I didn't really use any special features yet, but I should note that Paramount is currently including a free digital movie version to stream anywhere in this otherwise boxed disc (good until 5/23/2025). Read the terms, and note you will need a high-speed internet connection. I'm not sure if the movie can be loaded onto a tablet and watched later, say on an airplane, but it's a nice throw-in.I think the last two numbers were 17-4?? And now, I think I'll go to visit Mars, for...two weeks.

This is one of those guilty pleasures I’ve always liked so had to pick it up in 4k. Looks better than ever. Nice slipcover, but disappointed there were no extras. I rarely buy movies with no extras and wouldn’t have expected this is one I would break my rule. Does come with a digital copy and just would have like a “making of” or a couple of features. That said if you’re an Arnold fan this looks really good. Plus Richard Dawson (Rip) plays a great bad guy. Enjoy this for what it is and not what it’s missing.
