I was shocked with how light this device was when I first took it out of the box. It feels like an empty plastic box, which makes the magnetic attachment to a compatible phone feel very secure. The box also includes a short little flat cable that reaches perfectly between the phone and the SSD. Great.Using this device, I rolled a ProRes RAW clip for just over 35 minutes before my phone threw an error and stopped recording. Despite the error, the file is just fine, and the device had no issues connecting to my computer.Ideally this would have run the record until all 512 GB were used, but ProRes RAW is a very demanding format, and getting 35 minutes from a single clip is plenty impressive. Rolling in any other (more common) format would be just fine.As a piece of equipment on a shoot, I’m a little bit mixed on the way this is designed. There’s only one USB-C port, which plugs directly into the phone. This means it can’t be used with another device like a microphone, or (more importantly) with a power connection. Phone mounts that utilize the MagSafe connection and gimbals that span the back of a phone will not work with the magnetic mounting situation. It would be much more useful if it anlso acted as a USB hub, or had some kind of mounting solution for attaching to a cold-shoe or 1/4-20” port. This would be worth paying a small premium over the current price. With all that in mind, I will be using it when my shoots allow it. If I’m rolling b-roll with no need for audio or power, I’m in! It’s a great solution for the price. One final note regarding read-write speeds: my M3 MacBook Pro running Blackmagic Disk Speed test consistently got 808 MB/s write and 958 MB/s read while connected through the included cable. This is a far cry from what’s advertised on the box, but it’s still plenty for reading and writing phone footage. Read/write speed was very consistent, with no dips or boosts as the tests continued. This was one series of test on one machine, so YMMV.
