Under the Influence is The Devil Wears Prada with an influencer twist. We meet Harper as she’s applying for a too good to be true/sounds a little sketchy job working for a top influencer. Under the Influence continues Harper’s journey as Charlotte’s visionary support strategist with lots of ups and downs along the way.The story felt a little disjointed and long for me. We all know what’s coming but it took a while to get there. I wasn’t totally engaged in the story or the characters, even though I thought the author did a good job of making Charlotte both likeable and unlikeable within the same chapter.Under the Influence gets 3/5 for me. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Instantly one of my favorite books of 2023.The title is a play on words. At first glance one might assume that Under the Influence refers to imbibing alcohol or whatnot, but it’s actually about the trend of internet influencers. One in particular, Charlotte Green, seems too good to be true. In reality, most probably are.Anyone who has ever worked under a narcissistic boss or dealt with a narcissist in their lives will probably see resemblances of interactions with them here on these pages. I know I certainly did.Is this classic literature? No, but that’s not what I was looking for. What I sought out, and what the author delivered, was a fun escape and a peek behind the curtain of social media. It’s hard to believe that this is a debut novel from this author. I hope she goes on to write many more books.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I always enjoy a book with a good villain. My only complaint is that I feel like the end was very rushed.
She Treads Softly
Under the Influence by Noelle Crooks is a recommended, highly for some readers, novel set in the world of a major influencer.Harper Cruz is looking for a new job and applies to work for self-help influencer Charlotte Green. Harper is hired as Charlotte’s Visionary Support Strategist in Nashville for triple her last paycheck. If she thought the job offer was high pressure, once she arrives in Nashville Harper realizes just how high pressure and cult-like the job at The Greenhouse really is where everything is all about making Charlotte Green look good and working long hours doing exactly what she wants. This very easy to read novel feels like an update on The Devil Wears Prada. Readers who follow or are familiar with self-help "Hey you" social media influencers will likely relate much more to this novel than I did. It held my attention and I finished it, but ultimately it will be forgettable for me. However, I think a younger reader who follows influencers on social media will enjoy it more than I did. It also fits the description of an airplane book, interesting enough to hold your attention but you won't care if you misplace it. Apparently if you are familiar with the influencer the Charlotte Green character is based on, it makes it a better novel.Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of Gallery Books via NetGalley.

When I first began reading this debut novel, I was fairly certain I could tell in advance how it would progress-and how it would end up. I found myself shaking my head as I read the book, thinking that this was so obviously going to continue predictably until the end.But I was wrong.Although some of the protagonist’s experiences were predictable as they were laid out in the book, I slowly realized it wouldn’t necessarily play out as I thought it would. And as I progressed through the book, I WAS surprised and pleased that this revelation was indeed true. You need to read this book-not only as a young person, beginning your journey in establishing your future in business-but also if you are someone who had done so long ago. You will begin to find some of your own familiar stories here. I know I did-and I’m in my seventh decade, now retired. But yes-I recognize so many of these stories as similar to my own experiences, from so long ago.A cautionary tale for the young—a memory and familiar tale for those older and further along in their own journey. You’ll learn and enjoy this debut novel, as much as I did.I look forward eagerly to Ms. Crooks’ next book - and hope it comes out soon!
