The short story: Without high Dynamic Range image enhancement, picking up license plates can be very problematic with this new 4K system, especially at night when all that is recorded may be a white blob due to your car's headlights reflecting off the license plate.I ran the front camera next to my 3-year-old VIOFO A129Pro Duo which has the old Sony Exmor video sensor. Just like with Vortex Radar's test published on DashCamTalk and YouTube, I found that the camera has major issues with capturing license plates at night at a reasonable distance while my long-in-the-tooth VIOFO captures them perfectly, even 45 degrees off to the side. The glare from the reflective plates overwhelms the Blackvue camera.Blackvue says they didn't add HDR because their engineering didn't need it. But it does: Blackvue hobbled the new, amazing Sony Starvis-2 4K image sensor. VIOFO has captured the image quality and reliability crown by incorporating HDR with that new 4K sensor. If the gee-whiz cloud storage and connectivity, secure onboard storage, and robust parking mode are more important to you than capturing hit-and-run license plates, get this. Set-up is much more involved than a simple front/rear system due to the installation of the secure recording box. This is a good product otherwise; everything works. But the image quality issue is too big to ignore. My choice is a $350 VIOFO A229 Pro 4K HDR Dash Cam system, even though it doesn't come with all Blackvue's bells and whistles.HUGE CAVEAT: I noticed that this item is NOT being sold by Amazon or Blackvue even though it's being sold at suggested list price. That may impact the factory warranty. "Lectra" is the seller and has more complaints than usual on its Amazon profile. My rating system:5 Stars = Knocks it out of the park. A great value!4 Stars = Excellent product. A solid buy.3 Stars = It provides some value, but perhaps not as advertised.2 Stars = A little dubious, so do your research. Read the critical reviews!1 Star = Avoid this product and look elsewhere.

I liked this dashcam even though I think it's more expensive than it should be. I was happy with it for the few months it worked. Then it started alarming loudly from the unit. I haven't been able to get through to customer service and the only way to stop the constant alarm is to disconnect it. So now it's useless. I have researched online the issues that can trigger the alarm and nothing works. I believe I have a faulty unit. I will update this review if I can ever get customer service to respond to me.

I've tested quite a few dash cams over the last few years and this one is by far my favorite. To me it's the difference between running a cheap Sparkomatic radio versus a high end Alpine unit - it's just made so much better.BlackVue uses the best sensor on the market - the Sony Starvis 2. It is simply the best performing one on the market and all of the top of the line dash cam units use it for this reason. The way that these cams are set up is cool as well - the cameras are just cameras. No LCD, no buttons, no card slots - just slimline cameras that connect to the DVR box that you can stash away elsewhere in your car. This is great for several reasons - first the cameras are really compact and easy to tuck out of your line of site. Second, it keeps the sensitive electronics out of the hot zone in your car - the windshield. When you tuck that DVR box away you can mount it well out of the sun and heat which is great for longevity.Overall this is a great system, you can even opt for the cloud storage with the LTE module that stashes your recordings in the cloud so you don;t have to worry about the integrity of your recordings in the event of physical damage to your device

The BlackVue DR970X Box-2CH Plus is a premium dashcam with exceptional video quality and useful features like parking mode. Install was fairly easy and instructions were easy to follow. One drawback I see is the lack of bluetooth connectivity to transfer files and relies on wifi. Also the included 64gb sd card is a bit small specially when capturing 4k videos. Overall this is an excellent dash cam that requires some upgrading with larger sd card.

The installation of the dashcam is super intuitive and the hardwiring kit it comes with is great. The camera was installed on a Toyota RAV4 and the cords easily reached both ends of the vehicle. The kit also comes with a tool that helps hide any wires ensuring a sleek design. Additionally the app is very good, and the tamper proof box provides an extra piece of mind about leaving the car out. One thing, when driving it may pick up events very easily so I turned some alerts off, but overall a great tool
