I am not a tech guy. This is the first receiver I hooked up myself. I had a pioneer that the sound went out on. This will be my third receiver for my theater room with 7.1 surround as well as other speakers throughout the basement. The others were put in by professionals and I did not choose. First was a dennon that I loved but lightning fried the hdmi out port-the pioneer was never great. This unit was very easy to install and set up. Just followed all the instructions and used the microphone to set up the sound. It works seamlessly and sounds good. Owned a few months now and no issues with theater. Still having trouble figuring out how the 4 other speakers in my basement could run at same time. Zone 2 settings of some kind and have not dug in deep enough to the manual to get that worked out Hopefully. Can use separately but not all at same time like if I want the TV show or music on all speakers. Other than that, for the price I am satisfied with the purchase and easy set up for a novice.

After approx 6 months of normal operation, the system began to not produce sound when powered on. At the same time, it began to exhibit "bugs" e.g., the volume indicator and other on-screen info became white blocks vs letters and graphics. Lost the ability to see setup menus on screen. Holding the power button for 5 sec to "reboot" the system worked for a while. The application of the last firmware update on 23 June 2024 completely hosed the system to the point where it would switch input devices and then always switch back to BD/DVD regardless of those producing signal or selected. Could no longer access the settings menus on screen. "Reboot", unplug, etc, had no effect. Having read more 1 star and 2 star reviews, I see this is not a unique problem and that fixes are onerous and costly, in particular shipping the device for warrantee or repair exceeds the cost of the unit.Rather than endure the well documented customer service frustration, and accumulation of shipping fees, I instead launched the unit off my back deck with extreme prejudice and then threw it in the trash. Very satisfying, albeit costly. Would highly recommend.Needless to say will no longer buy Onkyo.

Originally bought a Denon S760H to use with my Samsung Q80T (2020 model), Xbox Series X, and Nvidia Shield. However, despite assurances that the Denons no longer have issues with 4k120 due to an updated chipset, this was not the case. To get it to pass the video signal from my series X through to the TV I had to repeatedly change input sources to make it handshake. The Denon would NOT pass through Atmos from the Series X no matter what I did. No issues with DTS:X or uncompressed audio. However, the only "set it and forget it" audio setting on the console is Atmos since some games are natively presented in Atmos, and those that aren't are PCM (which can be encoded to Atmos by it on the fly). So, setting it to Atmos will work in all circumstances. This Onkyo handles it flawlessly. In addition to flawless Series X atmos and 4k120 passthrough it handles all my other sources flawlessly. This includes 4k HDR rips from my movie collection on my server, played through Kodi. No issues with any audio/video format I've tried so far. Also sounds great for music in all modes, I prefer it in multichannel stereo though.I'm also really floored at how much better this sounds than the Denon, which I am returning due to the HDMI 2.1 issues. Same speakers, same room, and mostly default settings other than messing with speaker distances and crossovers (more on that later) and dialog is much clearer on this Onkyo. Overall, sounds much more balanced without using any kind of compression settings. The UI is good, and the info displays are fine. Nothing exceptional here. Better, again, than the Denon which couldn't overlay anything on top of 4k120 and caused the receiver to show the info on a black screen and needing to handshake again (unreliably) with your source. Onkyo wins again.Cons:- Chonky and doesn't really fit well in many entertainment centers. Hanging off the front of mine.- Gets noticeably hotter than the Denon it's replacing and combined with the size I am slightly concerned with space I have it in being inadequate - I had an older cheap Onkyo with a dead HDMI port, requiring a repair, and then it died again many years later.- Automated setup is worse than the Denon. Set the crossovers pretty poorly, same with the distances. Not as good as Audyssey.Despite those few cons, the thing actually works, and sounds great so it gets my recommendation. Is 5.1.2 Atmos/DTS:X overkill for my 750 sqft apartment? Yes. But I love it! This is the unit to buy in 2022.

I had many issues at first with this product. But then I realized it wasn't the receiver that I was having problems with. I was using a poor quality HDMI cable. I bought new HDMI cables and it works flawlessly.
