In the 7th installment of the series, we follow Lane Winslow and her new husband, police inspector Frederick Darling to Tucson, Arizona for their honeymoon. There is little time for rest and relaxation as the couple becomes embroiled in a murder case at their hotel. Meanwhile, Sargeant Ames is on his own back in Nelson and tasked with solving a suspicious death that seems to involve Tina Van Eyck, who he’s been hoping to get out on a second date since she accompanied him to Lane and Darling’s wedding. With the new and beautiful setting of Tucson, and not one, but two cases to follow along with, this may be my favorite book of the series so far. Whishaw effortlessly switches between the two locations, and even occasionally takes us back in time in a constantly shifting, and evolving story. I love when beloved characters are placed in a new setting and I also love when we still get to know what’s happening with those left behind as well. This series is so under-rated, I recommend it highly to fans of Jacqueline Winspear and Louise Penny. It was because I was all caught up on their books that I searched for and found Iona Whishaw. Lane Winslow deserves a seat beside Maisie Dobbs and Inspector Gamache.

This book is the seventh in the marvelous series of mysteries featuring amateur detective Lane Winslow and her new husband, Inspector Darling. The series just gets better. It has a wonderful sense of place and time. The time is the late 1940’s. WWII is over but still casting a long shadow over the characters and sometimes the plot. The place ordinarily is rural British Columbia, but this book also includes action in Tucson where Lane and Darling are honeymooning. Sargent Ames and the new officer Terrell are conducting their own investigations in Canada with occasional phone consultations with Darling. The cast of continuing characters is a strength of the series. Even the “one episode” characters are well developed. Lane’s background generates interest and gives her unique qualities that move the stories forward. Because the characters are drawn so well, it is best to read the books in order. Each story would stand alone, but you would miss out on the characters’ growth and development and that would be a loss. The language is mild, there are no graphic sex scenes, and the murders are not overly gory. Even still the series remains an adult series because of its sophistication and complexity. This series has grown in my mind to reach the top tier of literary mysteries on a par with those by Ann Cleeves, Martin Walker, Paul Doiron, Jane Harper, Louise Penny, Jean-Luc Bannalec, Elly Griffiths, and very few others. The series deserves more attention and promotion.

Darling and Lane Canada for a we!l deserved vacation an honeymoon. Not only do they get interrupted by more than one case, Kings Cove is keeping Ames and Terrell quite busy. This is wonderful series that goes back k to WWII and how the past affects the future of our main characters. My only wish is that the series continues and that another book will follow shortly. Characters gets are well thought out and the location of the books is unique and well described.
