Rely on Anne Perry for a good read.This one is different as the murders and most of the sleuthing take place in the vile, slum area called The Devil's Acre , where as it turns out many of the seemingly respectable gentlemen and ladies , go for a different kind of entertainment.Charlotte discovers accidentally that she can be a flirt .A light diversion from the grizzly subject of the investigation .There is more real danger for the Pitts than is usual. Thomas is stabbed in a street fight and believe it or not Charlotte shows she can give as much as she gets in a brawl with the madam of a brothel !Thomas arrives on time to save her , of course

Thomas and Charlotte Pitt have again brought to justice a dastardly killer. Anne Perry describes the awful living conditions in the Devil's Acre vividly, and also at the other end of the social ladder, the way the 'upper class' treat people who they think are the 'lower classes'. Charlotte takes terrible risks in her quest to help her husband find the killer, and in the process involving her sister as well, who I rather like. Once again, Anne Perry has written a great story in the Victorian era and I thoroughly enjoy reading this series.

The bough breaks not only in childhood but well into adulthood where no penitence can make amends. Wealth and impoverish at times go hand in hand; one feeding off the other.
