This chess set if good for a beginner to play with and learn to play chess. I use to have a similar set when I was a kid but it was much better built. This pieces are hollow and will break if one accidentally get stepped on and the board folds in to a square instead of a rectangle so there is a greater chance that the board will rip with more areas that it folds. This set would be better if the pieces were solid and had some felt on the bottom, and if the board was a little thicker and folded into a rectangle.It is still decent for learning but not build to last for a long time. I’m going to look for a better teaching set that I can buy that will last a lot longer.

I vividly remember learning how to play chess on a set just like this! Bought for my kiddos since the youngest can’t read and the oldest who could read the instructions still has a hard time remembering how the pieces move but doesn’t want my help when we’re playing (she is determined to beat me on her own). The only reason I would consider docking a star is that it is a basic, cardboard mat/board. It’s just like any other game board so I expect it to last, I just wish it was sturdier. This is just a preference and does not affect the play, as long as my toddler is patient when we pack up, I expect the board to last.

Would be good for a kid beginner. But was a little disappointed with the light hollow pieces and flimsy board.
