IhavebeenlivinginSeattleforacoupleyearsnow,andafterafinaladventureintheBahamasthatjustconcludedthisFebruary,thetimehascometoselltheboat.It'sbeenagreatsixyears,andI'dhighlyrecommendtheexperience.I'mlookingforsomeonewhowilltakegoodcareofher.She'sararebeauty,andhasseenmethroughalot,soshedeservesit. Somerledi,hull#52,wasoneofthelastShannon28'severmade.Thisincrediblytoughboatwilltakecareofyouwhenconditionsdeteriorate.She'sthe"offshore"layout:purpose-builttocrossoceansshortorevensingle-handed.Inthislayout,thequarterberthpositionsyourheadatthecenterofpitchfortheboat,andsoallowsmorecomfortablesleepingwhiletheboatisunderwaycomparedtotheV-berthoftheotherlayouts.InsteadoftheV-berth,theforwardcabinhasthehead,ahandyvice,andlotsofstoragespace.Movingtheheadtotheforwardcompartmentopensupthecabintomakeitfeelveryspacious.Theheadisconfiguredtopumpintoaholdingtank,whichcanbepumpedoutfromthedeckoroutofathrough-hullwhileoffshore. I'veputherthroughallsortsofconditionssailingtheentireeastcoast(seehttps://share.garmin.com/anlach)oftheUS.ShehadbeensailedfromtheGulfofMexicotoNovaScotiaevenbeforeIownedher,andshe'sreadytokeepgoing.Theshapeofthehullatthebowwillsplitsmoothlyintoawaveinsteadofslammingagainstit,whichgivesthisboataneasymotioncomparedtosomelighterboats.Therudderandpropellerareprotectedbyadeepskeg.Thisisagreatreliefwhenyou'resailingthroughfieldsoflobsterbuoysinMaine.Also,theencapsulatedleadkeelisstrong-youdon'thavetoworryaboutrustykeelboltsgivingwayifyourunagroundbecausetherearen'tany.Thekeelwaslayedupwiththehullaspartofthemold. TheoriginalYanmar2GMisdependableandhasbeenwell-maintained.It'seasiertoaccessthanmostotherShannonsthankstothewell-installed,commercialgradeBomarhatchinthecockpitsole.I'vereplacetheinternalzincstwice,mostrecentlyin2024.Themainshaftsealwasreplacedin2022,andthetransmissionsealtothepropshaftwasjustreplacedin2024.Therearecurrentlynooilleaks!Prettygoodfora40-year-oldengine. Theboatisveryeasytosingle-hand.Thewindvaneisasoldastheboatandhasfullrangeofmotion-nointerferencewiththesolarpanels.Thisisthereasonthesolararraywasdesignedasan"L"shape.There'salsoanelectronicauto-pilotforwhenthewindistoolightandyou'remotoring.Thetrimtabthatthewindvaneusescanbeadjustedwhenthevaneisdisconnectedtobalancethehelmwhenyou'reheeledover.Thetwo100Wsolarpanelsareenoughtorechargethebatteryeverydayandkeepthefridgerunningaroundtheclock.Ifyougetafewcloudydaysinarow,thereareswitchestoeasilyswapthehouseandstarterbatteriestoextendyourtimebeforeyoueverneedtoruntheenginetorecharge.Fornavigation,I'vealwaysusedacoupleIpadswithNavionics.TheyworkverywellwiththeVesperAIS-justconnecttotheWiFi,makesureit'senabledintheapp,andyouwillseetheotherboats. ThefirstfiftyoneShannon28smusthavegiventhebuildersplentyofpracticebecausetheinteriorwoodworkismasterful.Itfeelssupercozytobesurroundedbyteakwiththesuncominginthroughthebronzeportlights,orwiththelittlewoodstoveburningoncolderevenings.Thefullgalleyhasbothafreshwaterpump,whichcandrawfromanyofthethree20-gallonwatertanks,andaseparatepumphand-pumpforgettingwaterfromathrough-hullorpumpingouttheice-box(controlledwithaY-valve).TheOrigo/Dometicalcoholburningstovesaresafeandeasytouseforcooking,andtherefridgeratorhasalotofspace.Peopleupto6'2"inheightcanstandupfullyinthecabin-muchmoreroomthanothersmallboats. Ondeckandinthecockpit,thediamond-patternnonstickhelpspreventslipping.Thetillersteeringissimpleandworkswellwiththetransom-hungrudder.Themainbowrollerforthechainrodeismid-bowsprit.IhaveheardthiscanbeanissueonotherShannons,butthisoneisreinforcedbysteelplatesthatareweldedallthewayaroundthesprit.ThisreinforcementisnotstandardonotherS28s.Iwouldstillrecommendtosnubthechainusinganylonlinerunthroughasnatchblockatthetipofthesprit.Itworkswell,andI'veleftthatsnatchblockontheboat.Twinforestaysallowhoistingthehigh-clewedyankeejibevenwhiletherollerfurlingsailisbenton.Theself-tackingstaysailistrulywonderfulifyouhavetofightagainstsomechopupwind.New3/8thickstainlesssteelchainplateswerefabricatedandinstalledin2019.Whenhauledout,thecustomsunbrellacoverkeepssnowoffandUVdamagetoaminimum,andisinstalledwhilethemastisin.
