I love this series. I think the series was more raw (which I love) and kept you on the edge of your seat until the last two books. This is not to say that Prodigal Son and Dark Horse don’t do this as well, but to say, those two books are more cerebral than the previous books in the series. Although this review is about Dark Horse, Prodigal Son is where the shift started. I thoroughly enjoy(ed) each book. I have listened to this series multiple times (3 or more) with the exception of the latest, because I just finished it this morning. I find that with each listen, I enjoy them more than the previous listen. Dark Horse is a little slower, and it takes a bit, for it to go where I am used to going in the story. It’s still enjoyable though. This one is probably the most unrealistic, because of some of the interactions in the book with the cartel leadership. I will say, I do employ a large helping of suspension of disbelief in some portions of this book. I anxiously awaited this one, and of course, anxiously await the next. Gregg Hurwitz is a brilliant writer, and as previously stated, I love this series. There’s a lot more that I could say, but I don’t want to spoil any aspect of the book. I enjoyed Dark Horse, but a bit less than the previous books in the series.

When I read the description of this book I thought it would be just another cartel action novel. I was wrong to doubt Hurwitz and thus series. The book was thrilling. The characters from Joey to Here's to El Moreno to Darling Boy\Jovencito to Mia\Peter....just engrossing. So many different storylines...you just get caught up in the book and don't want to put it down. The series is so amazing that I can't undoubtedly say this is the best but.....its right up there. Evan Smoak is one if the best and Hurwitz is a Top 5 author for me...arguably the best.

Once in awhile I browse thru different genres in the Kindle store looking for something new to read. If I find something interesting, I make note of the author as who to read.On this browse-thru, I stumbled upon Orphan X. I wrote down the author's name and continued browsing.I have a few favorite authors, only 2 are "big names"(Stephen King & James Rollins). The other 3 I discovered in the Kindle store & read them because the 1st book was free. I have read all of Mark Tufo's "Zombie Fallout", all of Chris Philbrook's "Adrian's Undead Diary " and Sam Sisavath's "Purge of Babylon".Now I've made Gregg Hurwitz a favorite author and have read the "Orphan X" series twice. Next year is too long to wait for the next book!!!Action, suspense, this was PACKED with both! (It takes awhile, but it's nice to know that the Nowhere Man has a sense of humor.) I can honestly say I enjoyed ALL the characters and although the books aren't a continuation of each other, they don't go so far afield to make you think, "Ok, I'm not finishing this, there's no connection or continuity here." I read a book a few years ago that was 1st in a series. The only thing connecting the 1st with the 2nd was the main character. I didn't get 1/4 of the 2nd book read before deciding it wasn't worth it to continue.Yes, this is a bit long, but I hope I've made myself clear enough that you'll at least read the first book!! Highly unlikely, but my fingers are crossed that the next book comes out early!! Highly recommended!
