The concept is really fun. My daughter is only 3, and the age for this item is 6 but I thought it would be fun to do together. We sat down with two 12 year olds and my 3 year old to do the activity and even the 12 year olds found it a bit hard to do. The sand is so compacted and the tools provided are just cheap plastic, so it takes a lot of effort to really break the balls down. That having been said, everyone had fun doing it and was excited to find the stones inside. But beware, whatever they used to color the sand will stain. I have a plastic kids picnic table that we use for them to paint on etc. and that is what we used for this activity. It left a huge color stain on the table top. We did the activity outside so we could just hose things down, but the table didn't really come clean. So as long as you are prepared for that, then I think you will enjoy this kit.
