This book is like the Bible, it gives you inspiration, pleasure, and teaches you humility and prudence. At the same time, it highlights the forces of Evil...the sinkholes and the blackholes of cybersphere...It is a great book to read. Now I know why the NSA and others want to ban Tor. I had wondered why so many in law enforcement and those who "protect us" by surveilling us want to get rid of this browser which was, incidentally, originally funded by the US military and they released it.I knew something about TOR but 90% of the information in the book was new to me. I'm a writer and don't actually use TOR myself but I was astounded by the information the author put together after what is clearly exhaustive and personal research. This book does what few books like this do: it tells you what, why and then tells you specifically "how to"

I had started using the Tor browser but was not familiar with the capabilities of Tor, or as it turns out its limitations. My knowledge of Tor itself was very limited.This book covers Tor in general and the Tor browser, and what you can realistically expect in terms of privacy and anonymity. The book details the Tor concept and how you can use it. I thought I knew about Tor and the Tor browser but this book showed me I only knew 10% to 20% of how to effectively use Tor. The Tor browser is a start, but trying to configure it like other browsers (like I was with add-ons & plug-ins) will actually decrease the privacy you thought you were gaining by using Tor. If you are new to Tor or even moderately familiar with Tor this is the book for you.The book also gives a brief introduction to the "Dark Web" and what you will find there. It can only be accessed by the Tor browser or other secure methods. Standard browsers cannot access the Dark Web because Dark Web URLs do not use .com, .org, .htm, .html.. or any other standard URL extension. A Dark Web URL entered in a standard browser will result in Page Not Found. Some of the information on the Dark Web is illegal, which the author points out, but much more is perfectly legal information that cannot be found anywhere on the standard Web, or maybe found with great difficulty. A comparison is made to an iceberg. The visible part of the iceberg is the standard Web, and the enormous underwater part of the iceberg is the Dark Web. Have not tried it yet but will soon. Even finding the specially formatted URL can be a challenge. The author gives a few references of where to look.An excellent detailed introduction to Tor and privacy on the Web, along with a brief introduction to the Dark Web.

Lance Henderson has written a masterful tome on staying invisible on the web. This is a man who REALLY knows his stuff, borne of a decade of trial and error, but sharing it all so you won't make the same mistakes.This book was both an education on Tor and the Darknet, as well as an advanced setup instruction manual for maintaining privacy and staying invisible on the internet.It was an eye opener certainly; you are being tracked in even more ways than you already know.And, while I THINK Lance Henderson is one of the good guys, I still can't really be sure. Has he just had one too many run ins with overzealous law enforcement (or is HE law enforcement?). Perhaps he's a secret arms dealer? (Any or all could fit). Or does he make a living from assessing internet security? I don't know. What I do know is his level of knowledge was astounding, and his adherence to ultra strict security practices (way above and beyond the norm) admirable.This book covers what Tor is and how it works, what Tor can (& cannot) do and the many pitfalls and security leaks that will bring you undone, despite using it. Like anything, things are never simple and anonymity (especially on the internet) is never as easy as just using Tor as your new browser. There are a hundred (no, probably a thousand) different ways your privacy can be breached if you don't patch all the holes. And this book is a manual on how to do that.As he says, if you're a journalist in somewhere like North Korea reporting on despotic regimes then you absolutely need to implement such security strategies. Unfortunately the same holds true if you're a dealer in drugs, weapons or child pornography. (Let's just hope said lowlifes don't peruse the Kindle or Amazon bookstores). And sure, the information may be available on the web through other sources, but let them get it piecemeal and then fall into one of the many identity-exposing holes (where hopefully a giant spider lurks ready to wrap them up, inject them with digestive juices then slurp them up like a milkshake). One less cretin in the world to worry about.The book also discusses Bitcoin and Darkcoin and traversing dark markets (with your eyes open and common sense and gut instinct fully engaged) and how to spot a dark market fraudster and avoid becoming a victim of one. Also VPN’s, keyloggers, email encryption, and many other items of personal security-related interest.After reading this book and various other books/articles about the Darknet, I'm pretty sure it's a place I'll never want to go - it brings to mind that saying "what is seen can never be un-seen" (and the daily atrocities on the news are enough for me).But even though I don't need to maintain a level of anonymity anything like a journalist in a communist country, I am security-conscious (and even more so after reading this book) so I found much in it to be of interest, some of which I've added or implemented.And despite the technical subject matter, Lance Henderson's writing style makes this book easy to read and entertaining along the way. I didn't think it would be a book I would read cover to cover when I first bought it but its subject matter was intriguing enough to keep me interested to the end.This is a guy Ethan Hunt or Danny Ocean would want onboard.Highly recommended if you're very serious about online invisibility.
